Today’s #BeKind21 message is brought to you by our partners at The Ally Coalition.
The Census determines the distribution of $675 billion to our communities annually.
The National LGBTQ Task Force has found that not only are at-risk communities undercounted, but also “privileged” and wealthy people are overcounted, which “reinforce[s] systems of power and oppression in this country.” By filling out the Census, you will be helping to redistribute the power and properly distribute funds to the communities that need it.
For the first time, the Census is now recording the number of cohabiting same-sex couples. While the data won’t be fully representative of the LGBTQ community, it is considered a step in the right direction.
Your participation in the Census dictates the types of support that your community gets, including community development grants, HIV emergency relief project grants, and projects for assistance in transition from homelessness. With 40% of homeless youth being LGBTQ, this funding from the government is essential, as it provides much needed resources and support for these youth.
Your kindness challenge today: Fill out the Census by visiting 2020Census.gov or calling 844-330-2020 and follow TAC on Instagram to stay up to date on all things equality. And please help spread the word to make sure your friends, family, and neighbors complete it, too.
In Kindness,
The Ally Coalition
