As we aspire to target our professional aspirations, we often encounter numerous challenges that leave us questioning our career choices. In the bustling metropolis of life where ambition fuels our journey and dreams stand tall like skyscrapers on the horizon, failure seems to lurk as an unforeseen pothole on the road to success. Which leaves us with the question – Are we traversing a path fraught with peril or are we simply hesitant to confront the possibility of failure head-on?

I encountered something similar early on in my career – a pivotal exam in the medical field that didn’t unfold as I had hoped. The blow was staggering. It left me questioning my confidence. But through the aftermath of that setback, I realised that – failure, though painful, is not the end of the road. It’s a detour, a redirection towards growth and resilience.

I tried navigating through the “ghost of my failure past.”It required a balance of introspection and action. Instead of dwelling on the disappointment, I chose to dissect the experience. I strengthened my weaknesses and extracted valuable lessons hidden beneath my fragile wounds. I learned to acknowledge my shortcomings without succumbing to self-doubt. A crucial shift in perspective was recognising that success is not linear. It’s a journey marked by many road bumps. These, in turn, contribute to the narrative of growth. By reframing failure as a stepping stone, I liberated myself from the shackles of perfectionism. I broadened my horizons and embraced those roadblocks in my career trajectory. I transcended the narrow confines of tunnel vision, welcoming unexpected paths.

Success is not a one-size-fits-all affair. I started using horse blinds to block the idea of comparison. Everyone’s journey is unique. Behind the façade of success lies a tapestry of struggles that shapes an individual’s professional odyssey.

It’s not easy to be resilient. It’s not easy to think about perseverance when one is faced with the idea of failure. But it is necessary to reclaim one’s dreams and work on the hope of achieving them. Today, as a research fellow at the esteemed Cleveland Clinic, I am reminded of the transformative power of failure. Failure is not the end of the story; it’s the fuel that ignites a relentless drive within me. It propells me to work ten times harder to turn my dreams into reality.
